David Bennett Galloway III knows the importance of a good handoff.

And, at Chapin High School, he’s taken more than a few to the house. His talents on the football field earned him countless awards and accolades. The South Carolina running back was one of the state’s most decorated prospectives, nabbing all-state and offensive player of the year honors on his way to becoming a three-star recruit.

But, more importantly, his work on the gridiron has allowed him to continue playing. This season, he’ll suit up as a walk-on for the University of Louisiana-Monroe.

Yet, with more touchdowns in his future, the freshman isn’t as interested in soaking up the cheers from the stands. David Bennett Galloway III is mainly focused on spreading cheer. After all, during the holidays, giving is much more rewarding than receiving a handoff.

That’s why David Bennett Galloway III puts in just as much effort off the field. Although it doesn’t draw nearly as much attention as his on-the-field work, his commitment to charity is impressive nonetheless. Throughout high school, he’s been devoted to helping others. This is a year-round endeavor. But the holidays can be especially tough for those in need. He can’t tackle this problem alone.

Hoping to encourage others to pick up the ball and run with it, the Chapin native tosses out two primary ways you can give back too during the holiday season.

Donate

There’s no denying that the holidays are all about gifts. Seeing boxes tucked under a Christmas tree and stockings overflowing with trinkets is instant joy. Luckily, it’s easy to pass that feeling on to others. Multiple organizations, like Operation Christmas Child and the Salvation Army Angel Tree, make shopping for and sending presents to families in need incredibly simple.

Yet it isn’t just toys. Use the holiday season to provide basic needs, like winter coats or shoes, to those less fortunate. New or slightly used clothing is another great way to keep struggling families comfortable during the holidays. Or, you can even donate money to an established not-for-profit organization, like Feeding America. Even the smallest gesture goes a long way.

Volunteer

All these gifts help families overcome financial hurdles. Yet nothing is more valuable than time. If your own resources are limited, volunteer with a local charity, church, or organization. Homeless shelters are in constant need of assistance. Because of the overwhelming donations that flood in during the holidays, some groups need manpower to sort and distribute these items.

Since David Bennett Galloway III enjoys interacting with individuals one-on-one, he’s been a frequent visitor to Generations of Chapin, and The Heritage at Lowman assisted living facilities in his community. Although he does help with general clean-up duties and meal deliveries, he also entertains by singling Christmas carols to the residents. Organized by a former teacher, this has become an annual tradition that he looks forward to each year.

Even small time commitments can be rewarding. It doesn’t take countless hours to feel like you’ve scored.
