Success often begins with a deeply personal story, and for Dr. Ann Nguyen-Chung, that story became the foundation of a growing movement centered on healthier living. After being diagnosed with multiple health conditions and experiencing ingredient sensitivities firsthand, the practicing dentist found herself looking beyond traditional self-care products in search of cleaner, more mindful alternatives. What started as a personal wellness journey soon evolved into a mission to help others make more intentional choices about the products they use every day.

That mission gave birth to Hippotanicals, a dentist-founded wellness brand committed to preventative, whole-body care through thoughtfully crafted, plant-based products. From handcrafted flower-shaped lotion bars and nourishing body soaps to lip, oral, and hair care, every product is created with minimal ingredients, free from artificial dyes and synthetic fragrances, and packaged using biodegradable, plastic-free materials. Now available in more than 100 storefronts nationwide, Hippotanicals is proving that influence isn’t measured solely by professional accomplishments, it’s also reflected in the positive impact you make on the lives of others. In this exclusive interview with Influential People Magazine, Dr. Ann Nguyen-Chung shares how personal adversity inspired purposeful entrepreneurship, why prevention remains at the heart of everything she creates, and how Hippotanicals is making wellness simple, approachable, and effective for everyone.

Hello Dr. Ann, Hippotanicals was founded by you, a practicing dentist. What inspired you to move from clinical dentistry into creating a wellness and personal care brand?

Dr. Ann Nguyen-Chung: Dentistry has always been about prevention for me. Every day, I help patients prevent problems rather than simply treat them after they happen. Over time, that mindset expanded beyond oral health and into overall wellness.

The turning point came in 2020 when I had a severe allergic reaction to a lip balm with 37 ingredients. Within hours, my lips were covered in painful blisters. Even as a dentist, I couldn’t easily figure out what had caused the reaction because the ingredient list was so long.

I started making my own lip balm with a short list of simple, plant-based ingredients, and my lips finally healed. What began as a personal solution eventually became Hippotanicals. My goal is to create products that are effective, thoughtfully formulated, and made with ingredients people can actually recognize and understand.

You describe Hippotanicals as being rooted in preventative, whole-body wellness. How does that philosophy show up in your product formulations and brand decisions?

Dr. Ann Nguyen-Chung: As a practicing dentist, prevention shapes the way I think about health. I believe the small choices we make every day have a lasting impact.

That philosophy guides every product we create. Instead of adding ingredients simply because they’re popular, I ask whether each one serves a real purpose. If it doesn’t, it doesn’t belong in the formula.

The same thinking applies to our packaging. We prioritize biodegradable, plastic-free options whenever possible because caring for our health and caring for the environment should go hand in hand.

Many of your products are made with minimal, plant-based ingredients. What are some of the biggest ingredient concerns you set out to eliminate when developing the line?

Dr. Ann Nguyen-Chung: My biggest goal was to eliminate unnecessary ingredients.

Many personal care products contain long lists of fillers, artificial fragrances, synthetic dyes, and other additives that aren’t always essential. As someone with sensitive skin, I wanted to create products with fewer ingredients while still delivering great performance.

As a dentist, I also wanted our oral care products to support healthy daily habits without relying on unnecessary additives. I believe every ingredient should have a purpose, and keeping formulas simple makes it easier for consumers to understand exactly what they’re using.

Your lotion bars are flower-shaped and handcrafted in small batches with multiple scent options. What inspired the focus on both sensory experience and functionality in your products?

Dr. Ann Nguyen-Chung: I believe self-care should be both effective and enjoyable.

Our lotion bars were designed to deeply moisturize while creating a simple moment of joy. The flower shape makes them fun to use, and the different scent options let people choose what fits their mood, whether that’s something refreshing, calming, or comforting.

When people genuinely enjoy using a product, they’re much more likely to make it part of their daily routine.

Hippotanicals offers a wide range of care categories, from body and lip care to oral and hair care. How do you approach maintaining consistency and quality across such a diverse product line?

Dr. Ann Nguyen-Chung: No matter what category we’re developing, we follow the same principles: simple ingredients, thoughtful formulations, and products that solve real problems.

I stay closely involved throughout product development and spend a lot of time researching ingredients, testing products, and making sure everything meets the standards I want associated with the Hippotanicals name.

I’d rather launch fewer products that I’m proud of than rush something to market.

Sustainability is a major focus for modern beauty brands. How does your commitment to plastic-free and biodegradable packaging influence your production and scaling process?

Dr. Ann Nguyen-Chung: Using plastic-free and biodegradable packaging definitely comes with challenges. It often costs more and requires extra testing to make sure it performs well during shipping and everyday use.

As Hippotanicals grows, I’m always looking for ways to improve both our products and our packaging. I don’t believe sustainability has to be perfect from day one, but I do believe businesses should keep moving in the right direction and continue making better choices whenever possible.

With your products now available in storefronts nationwide, what has growth looked like for Hippotanicals, and what challenges have come with expanding distribution?

Dr. Ann Nguyen-Chung: It’s been incredibly rewarding to watch Hippotanicals grow from products I originally made for myself into a brand that’s now available through retailers, hotels, online marketplaces, and the Army & Air Force Exchange Service, serving military families around the world.

One of the biggest lessons I’ve learned is that growth isn’t just about selling more products. It’s about maintaining quality, building strong relationships, and making sure every opportunity aligns with our values.

Balancing my career as a practicing dentist while growing the business hasn’t always been easy, but it’s also what keeps me grounded and connected to the people I ultimately created these products for.

For readers new to Hippotanicals, what do you hope they experience or feel the very first time they incorporate your products into their daily self-care routine?

Dr. Ann Nguyen-Chung: I hope they discover that self-care doesn’t have to be complicated.

I want people to enjoy products that feel good, work well, and give them confidence in what they’re putting on their body. If someone can read the ingredient list and immediately understand what’s inside, that’s a win for me.

More than anything, I hope Hippotanicals reminds people that sometimes the simplest choices can have the biggest impact on their health and well-being.
