It was a cold winter day, after running errands around town, young Rodica and her mother went into a pastry shop. As they received their warm pastries, Rodica noticed an old man peering in, almost longing for a warm meal. The man was one of Romanians forgotten people, a man down on his luck.

Young Rodica couldn’t take her eyes away from him. She felt terrible knowing he was suffering in the cold without warmth, without food. She looked at the man, then looked at her mother.
