Andrew Jordan has built a career around helping schools grow, empowering teachers, and preparing students for success. From co-owning entrepreneurial ventures with his family to leading schools as a principal and superintendent, Jordan’s journey shows how creativity, strategy, and hands-on leadership can make a real difference.
“I’ve always believed leadership is about helping others grow,” Jordan says. “When you focus on people first, everything else falls into place.”
Early Beginnings: Family, Sports, and Entrepreneurship
Born in Stockton, Illinois, Andrew grew up in a family that valued hard work and community. Alongside his brothers Tom and Steve, he developed a strong work ethic and a love for sports. Together with Tom, he co-owned J3 Timing and the Wine Run 5K events.
“Running J3 Timing and Wine Run 5K taught me a lot about planning, problem-solving, and managing a team,” Jordan recalls. “Every event had its challenges, and I learned to adapt quickly and keep everyone focused on the goal.”
He also started and ran the Stockton 3-on-3 Basketball Tournament for fifteen years, which donated over $50,000 to local causes. “It wasn’t just about basketball,” he says. “It was about giving back, teaching teamwork, and creating something meaningful for the community.”
Transitioning into Education Leadership
Jordan began his formal leadership journey as an assistant principal. He quickly realized that the skills he had developed in entrepreneurship applied directly to schools.
“Managing a school is a lot like running a business,” he explains. “You have people, processes, and goals. If you can align them, you can create an impact.”
He later served as principal for four years and superintendent for two. During this time, he focused on building strong school culture, mentoring teachers, and creating programs that supported student success. His work earned him recognition as the Illinois Principal Association Principal of the Year in 2022.
Driving Innovation in Schools
Innovation has always been a focus for Jordan. He has secured and implemented programs through grants, including the Stronger Connections Grant through ISBE and high impact tutoring grants through Illinois State University. These initiatives allowed him to expand learning opportunities and provide resources that enhanced both teaching and learning.
“Grants are about more than money,” Jordan says. “They are tools to create programs that give students and teachers opportunities they wouldn’t have otherwise.”
He also participates in state committees, including Illinois State Representative Jason Bunting’s Educational Committee and the Illinois Masonic Student Assistance Program, which provides professional development for schools across the state. “Being part of these groups keeps me connected to best practices and allows me to advocate for schools like mine,” he says.
Lessons from Sports and Community Engagement
Sports remain central to Jordan’s leadership philosophy. Coaching and organizing athletic events has influenced how he approaches school culture and student development.
“Sports teach resilience, teamwork, and leadership,” he explains. “You learn that mistakes are part of growth. The same applies in schools. Students need opportunities to lead, take risks, and learn from challenges.”
His experience running sports events has also helped him engage the community and build student leadership. Programs like the basketball tournament or local races create opportunities for students to take ownership and develop real-world skills.
Mentorship and Teacher Leadership
Jordan emphasizes the importance of empowering teachers to lead. Mentorship and professional development are at the core of his approach. “When teachers are given opportunities to lead, the whole school benefits,” he says. “It creates a culture where everyone is invested in growth, not just the administrators.”
By encouraging teacher leadership, he has helped schools implement new programs, improve instruction, and foster stronger student engagement. Jordan believes that lasting impact comes from developing people, not just implementing policies.
Looking Ahead: Sustaining Growth and Innovation
Jordan’s journey shows that leadership is about vision, creativity, and building strong relationships. From entrepreneurial beginnings to leading schools, he has demonstrated that innovation and impact can happen in any setting, even in smaller communities.
“Education is always changing,” he says. “The key is staying curious, embracing challenges, and helping students and teachers reach their full potential.”
