The decision came down to one simple question: how can we deliver an even better product to our customers? Demand for custom cabinetry has grown significantly as more homeowners invest in renovating their existing homes. We wanted to stay ahead of that demand without sacrificing the craftsmanship that built our reputation. CNC technology gives us remarkable precision and consistency while allowing our craftsmen to focus on the finishing details that truly set custom work apart. Looking ahead, this investment positions us to take on more sophisticated projects, improve efficiency, and continue delivering cabinetry that homeowners can enjoy for decades.
There’s often a perception that automation replaces craftsmanship. How do you balance modern manufacturing technology with the handcrafted quality that defines Atlanta Bookshelves?
I understand why people think that, but in our shop, technology is a tool rather than a replacement for craftsmanship. The CNC machine handles repetitive cutting with incredible accuracy, but it doesn’t build the cabinet. Our team still assembles every component, sands every surface, applies every finish, and installs every project by hand. Those steps require experience, attention to detail, and pride in the work. Technology simply gives our craftsmen a better starting point. It removes inconsistencies in fabrication so they can devote more time to perfecting the details that clients notice and appreciate every day.
Many homeowners today are choosing to renovate instead of move. What changes have you noticed in the types of custom cabinetry and built-in projects clients are requesting over the past few years?
We’ve definitely seen a shift toward projects that improve how people live in their homes every day. Home offices, media walls, mudrooms, walk-in closets, and multifunctional storage spaces are becoming much more common. People want solutions that are customized to their routines instead of relying on freestanding furniture that doesn’t fully utilize the space. Clients are also thinking long term. They’re looking for cabinetry that feels like it was built with the home rather than added later. That mindset has created greater appreciation for custom woodworking because it combines beauty, organization, and lasting value in a way mass-produced products simply cannot.
You’ve spoken about viewing custom cabinetry as a permanent architectural feature rather than simply furniture. What design principles help ensure your projects remain functional and visually relevant for decades?
We always begin by understanding how the space will function, both today and years from now. Trends change, but good design doesn’t. We focus on clean proportions, quality materials, and layouts that make everyday life easier. Storage needs also evolve, so flexibility is important. We think about how a family might use a room differently over time and design with that in mind. By integrating cabinetry into the home’s architecture rather than following short-term design trends, we create installations that continue to look appropriate and perform well long after they’re completed.
Every home presents unique architectural challenges. Can you share an example of a particularly complex project and explain how your team developed a custom solution that wouldn’t have been possible with standard cabinetry?
One project that stands out involved creating a full wall of built-in shelving and cabinetry in an older home where none of the walls were perfectly square. Standard cabinets would have left uneven gaps and looked out of place. We digitally measured the space, created detailed CAD drawings, and fabricated every component specifically for that room. During installation, everything fit together seamlessly despite the irregular architecture. That’s the advantage of custom work. Every dimension is tailored to the home rather than forcing the home to adapt to standardized products. The finished result looked completely original to the house.
Sustainability has become increasingly important in residential construction. Beyond using quality materials, what does responsible craftsmanship and sustainable cabinet manufacturing mean to you?
For us, sustainability begins with building products that don’t need to be replaced every few years. A well-designed cabinet made from durable materials has a much smaller environmental impact over its lifetime than something that ends up in a landfill after a short period.
