How would you define an influential person?

Marcus: An influential person is not defined by the measure of success. It is a person who recognizes their power and does better based on experiences to make the world better. Amid planting the seeds, it is important to be grounded and mindful of the impact one may have when being seen as an influential person.

In what ways have you been influential throughout your life and career?

Marcus: I have been influential in my personal life displaying that you do not have to be a product of your environment. I grew up in poverty and although my peers were making not good choices, I knew early on that I wanted my story to be different. I am grateful for my friend Rico who encouraged me to always put education first and encouraged my mom to put me in my former boarding school. Although Rico is no longer here on earth, he would remind me that I influenced him in a lot of ways. In my career, I would hope that the influence that I have had thus far is to never stop believing and working towards your dreams.

Name a few people that have influenced you and tell us why?

Marcus: I have been very fortunate to meet amazing people from all walks of life. The impact each person has had in my life has assisted me in one way or another. The top three people who have influenced me to see beyond my reality were my third-grade teacher Ms. Taylor, from Brooklyn, New York. Ms. Taylor was the first person to challenge me academically and display my work as an example of what college professors look for in students. At the time I was unaware of higher education after twelfth grade. Therefore, if it was not for Ms. Taylor’s influence, I do not know what my life would have turned out to be.

In the fifth grade, I transferred from my neighborhood school for better opportunities elsewhere. In my new school environment, Ms. Wilkerson established my writing abilities and encouraged me to always write. Thus, if I never went to another school, I would never have crossed paths with Ms. Wilkerson.

Mr. Kevin Cotton was the best person to enter my life while attending boarding school. Mr. Cotton worked hard to provide students with opportunities outside of Washington, D.C. and because of his efforts, I was able to study abroad in my eleventh-grade year of high school in Cape Eleuthera, Bahamas for five months. The experience changed my life forever and each person prior to that experience guided me to always work hard, because you never know what doors may open for you.

What things do you try not to be influenced by?

Marcus: I try not to be influenced by what other people are doing. It is important for me to be always supportive and never envious of someone else’s journey. Today, social media being the leading force of different influential people can become a distraction. I remain grounded by focusing on my faith, great people, and work.

What are you up to these days?

Marcus: 2023 has been great to me and these days I am taking a few months away from entertainment. I am recharging myself in all aspects of my life. However, when I do reenter my career, I will be preparing to shoot this summer Greed and Loyalty that I am starring in, and Executive Producing through Pure Prestige Entertainment.

What’s the most important thing in your life right now?

Marcus: The most important thing to me right now is focusing on my mental health and not burning myself out to achieve all my goals. It is healthy to have a plan but also to take moments for myself outside of work.

Where do you see yourself in five years?

Marcus: In the next five years, I see myself on larger entertainment television shows, movies, and Broadway. In the midst, of being a talent owning my own talent agency to provide opportunities for upcoming talent.

What’s the best thing that happened to you this year?

Marcus: The best thing that happened to me this year was receiving a hug from Vivica A. Fox after filming my scene for the upcoming BET+ movie The Tonesa Welch Story: First Lady of BMF coming later this year.
