When Joshua D. Mellberg started his career in finance, he didn’t have a crystal ball. What he did have was a clear focus: build with purpose, lead with clarity, and think long-term. Over two decades later, that mindset has helped him create two Inc. 5000-recognized firms, educate countless consumers, and shape how retirement income planning is delivered in the U.S.

“I’ve always been drawn to ideas that solve real problems,” Mellberg says. “The challenge is doing that in a way that holds up over time.”

For Influential People Magazine, his story is not just about titles or business wins. It’s about bringing structure to complexity—and doing it with staying power.

Early Start in a Complex Industry

Mellberg’s career began shortly after graduating from Western Michigan University’s Haworth College of Business. He became licensed in Life and Health insurance early on and immediately started helping clients understand their retirement options. While many young professionals might have hesitated in front of older, more experienced clients, Mellberg leaned into listening.

“I was young, and that meant I had to earn trust quickly,” he recalls. “I learned that clear communication and asking the right questions went a long way.”

That early experience set the tone for everything that followed. His focus was never just on numbers—it was on helping people make sense of them.

Founding J.D. Mellberg Financial

In 2005, Mellberg launched his first major venture, J.D. Mellberg Financial. The firm specialized in retirement income planning, with a specific emphasis on annuities. But what set the company apart was its focus on education and clarity.

“The goal was to remove confusion,” he says. “If people understood what they were choosing, they’d make better decisions—and feel better about them.”

The model worked. J.D. Mellberg Financial grew steadily and landed on the Inc. 5000 list for seven consecutive years. That kind of growth, especially in a tightly regulated space, is rare. But Mellberg attributes it to structure—not speed.

“There’s no shortcut to building trust,” he adds. “It comes from systems, training, and delivering a consistent experience.”

After 15 years of growth, he successfully sold a majority stake in 2020, a move that gave him the chance to step back and think about what was next.

Launching Secure Investment Management

After the sale, Mellberg didn’t step away from the industry. Instead, he leaned into a new opportunity to modernize it. He founded Secure Investment Management (SIM)—a tech-enabled, compliance-focused firm designed for scale and clarity.

SIM quickly gained traction, earning spots on the Inc. 5000 in 2024 and 2025. It reflected many of the same values Mellberg held from day one: simplicity, longevity, and clear decision-making.

“It wasn’t about doing more,” Mellberg says. “It was about doing it better, with the right infrastructure behind it.”

The firm blends advisory services with technology and is designed to give both clients and advisors more transparency and support. It also continues his work around educating both professionals and consumers alike.

Reaching Audiences Through Education

Throughout his career, Mellberg has emphasized financial literacy. He hosted public TV programming on Arizona PBS, sharing insights into retirement planning in plain, relatable terms. He’s also spoken nationally on topics like annuities, income strategy, and how to design firms that stand up to change.

“Most people just want to feel confident,” he explains. “That starts with understanding the plan. It shouldn’t feel like a mystery.”

His approach has helped bridge the gap between technical knowledge and everyday understanding. That skill—making the complex simple—is part of what makes him effective both as a communicator and business leader.

A Grounded Approach to Leadership

Today, Mellberg lives in Tucson, Arizona, with his wife and son. He’s a long-time member of YPO Scottsdale, where he connects with other executives committed to personal and professional growth. For him, leadership isn’t about attention. It’s about alignment.

“Big ideas are great,” he says. “But they only matter if they’re grounded in something solid—systems, people, and a clear mission.”

He brings that same mindset to Secure Investment Management, where he continues to guide the firm with an eye on consistency and long-term value. It’s less about rapid change, and more about sustainable progress.

A Career Shaped by Big Ideas That Work

Joshua Mellberg didn’t set out to become an industry name. He set out to solve real problems and help people navigate decisions that matter. That focus has led to successful companies, loyal clients, and a respected voice in financial services.

Whether he’s building a business or sharing insights on TV, Mellberg sticks to a simple philosophy: Clarity creates confidence. And over time, that confidence builds trust—one decision at a time.

“What you build matters,” he says. “But how you build it matters more.”
