You have a 20 year career in journalism. Why is it your passion?
I told my mom when I was 4-years-old that I wanted to be a reporter on TV. I have known for a long time this was going to be my path and I worked really hard to make it happen.
Reporting and anchoring local news broadcasts for 15 years was a real accomplishment for me. I got to do everything I ever wanted including working my way back home to anchor the news in Southern California.
But in the last two years, creating “The News Girl” platform on social media has really given me a renewed sense of why I got into journalism in the first place.
I love facts. I love to share facts. I love digging around in boring documents to find the truth and then use the skills I’ve developed over my career to explain those seemingly boring facts in a way that’s interesting and relevant to everyone’s everyday life.
My followers always thank me and tell me that I make the news understandable and that when they hear something they “run” to my page to verify if it’s true. I get hundreds of comments a day from my followers telling me that they trust me. That’s the best compliment I could ask for.
Tell us about “The News Girl” with 2 million subscribers, fans and loyal followers. Are you putting the “Real” back into news?
I feel it’s my responsibility to bring the ideals and ethics of traditional journalism back to the mainstream and weave those ideals into the new digital age. There are plenty of incredible journalists out there today doing amazing work, but unfortunately, their work is overshadowed by the conspiracy, commentary and speculation of the internet.
I believe the path I am creating is the future of news and journalism. People want the simplicity of the news delivered to their phones. They want to feel like they can trust the people who are reporting the news for them. And sadly, these days, there is a large majority of people who don’t trust traditional broadcast news.
I have made it my mission to always be accurate, always be honest and always listen to what my followers are saying and answer their very real questions. I think they feel forgotten and left out. I want to make sure, to the best of my ability, that I hear them and get them through what’s happening in the world around them.
Because I am just one person and I do everything myself including, source, report, shoot, edit and do all the graphics for each of my social media news stories, I can’t possibly cover every big story in the country ever single day.
So, I just started The News Girl News Roundup daily email. It’s free and my followers just sign up on my website. Every night I send them an email with my daily videos and other big stories they should be watching.
In the next month or so I am going to be announcing the next level of my journey as “The News Girl.” It will be just one more way I can serve my audience.
Tell us about BEONDTV.
BEONDTV is one of my greatest accomplishments.
Starting a business is always scary, especially for a journalist who has only known the inside of a newsroom. But to be able to co-create something so positive with the other co-founders who are so talented and dedicated has been such a dream.
BEONDTV is a platform for cool, curated content. Our mission is to uplift, educate and entertain and everything we do revolves around that mission. We are very proud to be a Certified Women Minority Business Enterprise.
BEONDTV has the only entertainment show based in Las Vegas, called “Lights, Camera, Vegas.” We have an amazing travel show called “Explore This” with two hosts who you’ve seen on Discovery Channel. They take viewers to the most amazing places in the world. Interested in the crypto currency world, not sure what it is or how it works? We have “BEOND the Blockchain.” And of course we have our flagship show, “Carlos & Lisa” which is the show I co-host with my longtime television partner and BEONDTV co-founder, Carlos Amezcua.
Besides the amazing content we provide our television and online viewers, BEONDTV believes in putting content creators first, making them part of the process and giving them ownership over their work.
Most of the time, creators and talent are left out of that side of the business. As creators ourselves, we don’t believe in that.
Together, we have grown BEONDTV to 8 shows, 3 television partners (and growing), 9 million+ monthly impressions and 4 million views across our digital channels.
All that in just 4 years.
