What inspired you to launch Moran Elkarif Designs 20 years ago?
I’ve always been fascinated by how spaces influence our emotions and behaviors. After studying interior design at SCAD and completing my Master’s at Parsons, I felt ready to bring my vision to life. In 2004, I launched Moran Elkarif Designs with the goal of creating a firm that emphasized creativity and client collaboration, where each project would reflect a unique blend of aesthetics and functionality.
Your firm is known for its client-centric approach. How do you ensure every project aligns with the client’s vision?
At Moran Elkarif Designs, we believe every client’s needs are unique. We start each project with in-depth consultations to understand their lifestyle, preferences, and aspirations. It’s not just about making spaces beautiful; it’s about creating environments that enhance clients’ everyday lives. This collaborative process ensures clients feel heard and involved, which builds trust and results in spaces that are truly personalized.
How have client expectations evolved over the years?
Clients today are more informed and design-savvy, thanks to social media and design platforms. They’re not just looking for aesthetic appeal but also want spaces that are functional, sustainable, and reflective of their personality. There’s a growing emphasis on well-being, with clients prioritizing comfort alongside visual impact. This shift aligns with our commitment to creating timeless designs that enhance how people live and work.
Sustainability is a major focus in your work. How do you integrate eco-conscious practices into your designs?
Sustainability has always been a core value for us. It’s not just a trend; it’s a responsibility. We focus on using eco-friendly materials, energy-efficient lighting, and sourcing locally when possible. By partnering with local artisans and suppliers, we reduce our carbon footprint while supporting the community. For us, sustainability in design is about creating spaces that are both beautiful and long-lasting.
Can you share a recent project where sustainability was particularly impactful?
A recent project involved transforming a historic New York brownstone. The client wanted a mix of classic charm with modern, sustainable features. We used reclaimed wood, low-VOC paints, and energy-efficient systems to enhance the building’s character while reducing its environmental impact. The final result was a blend of timeless elegance and sustainability, which thrilled the client.
You’ve worked on both residential and commercial projects. How do you approach these different types of spaces?
While the principles of great design remain consistent—functionality, beauty, and comfort—the objectives differ. For residential projects, we focus on personalizing spaces to reflect the client’s lifestyle, creating a sense of sanctuary. In commercial projects, we focus on brand identity, optimising spaces for productivity and customer experience. Whether it’s a home or a business, our goal is to design environments that inspire and enrich those who use them.
What advice would you give to aspiring interior designers?
Design is constantly evolving, so stay curious and keep learning. Travel, explore art, study architecture, and immerse yourself in diverse cultures. These experiences broaden your creative perspective. At the same time, never lose sight of the client’s vision. Understanding their needs and translating that into a cohesive design is what sets great designers apart. Also, embrace sustainability—it’s the future of our industry.
How do you stay inspired and ahead of industry trends?
I draw inspiration from various sources—art, nature, travel, and even everyday conversations. Visiting art galleries, exploring new cities, and experiencing different cultures all contribute to my design perspective. I also engage with the design community through speaking events and workshops. This continuous learning keeps me connected to the latest trends while remaining true to our design philosophy.
What’s next for Moran Elkarif Designs as you celebrate 20 years in the industry?
We’re excited about the future! We plan to push the boundaries of what’s possible in interior design by exploring new technologies and sustainable materials. We’re also expanding our services to include virtual design consultations, making our expertise more accessible beyond New York. At the core, we’ll stay true to our mission of creating spaces that are both beautiful and meaningful.
How will Moran Elkarif Designs celebrate its 20th anniversary milestone?
We’re hosting an exclusive event to showcase some of our most iconic projects. It’s a way to express gratitude to our clients, partners, and team members who’ve supported us over the years. The celebration will highlight our commitment to sustainability and share our vision for the future. It’s not just about looking back but also setting the stage for the next 20 years of design excellence.
