A 1986 graduate of Concordia University, Nebraska, with a major in Speech/Drama, Rev. Burger went on to earn his Master of Divinity from Concordia Seminary, St. Louis, in 1990. His ministry journey began as a Youth Pastor in Giddings, TX, and continued through various leadership roles in Missouri, Nebraska, and Iowa. Along the way, he and his wife, Angie, raised triplet daughters and embraced opportunities to serve both locally and globally, including mission trips to Vietnam and Cambodia.

In 2018, Rev. Burger founded Metanoia Ministries, an organization rooted in the denominations of the Lutheran Church Missouri Synod (LCMS). Transitioning from parish ministry to his current role as Missionary at Large in 2020, Rev. Burger now serves as a pastor to the world, embodying his passion for leadership, teaching, and mission work.

What qualities do you believe are essential for a successful leader, and why?

I believe humility, vision, and a servant’s heart are essential for a successful leader. Humility keeps us grounded, reminding us that leadership is not about personal glory but about serving others. Vision provides direction, helping us see the bigger picture and guide others toward a shared goal. A servant’s heart ensures that our leadership is rooted in love and care for those we lead.

How can leaders effectively balance empathy and authority in their decision-making?

Balancing empathy and authority requires listening deeply and leading decisively. As a leader, I strive to understand the needs and concerns of those I serve, showing compassion and care. At the same time, I recognize the importance of making firm decisions that align with our mission and values. It’s about being approachable while staying committed to the principles that guide us.

What strategies can leaders use to inspire and motivate their teams during challenging times?

During challenging times, I focus on reminding my team of our shared purpose and the hope we have. Encouragement, clear communication, and leading by example are key. I also believe in celebrating small victories along the way, as they help build momentum and keep spirits high.

How does emotional intelligence impact a leader’s ability to build trust and foster collaboration?

Emotional intelligence is vital for building trust and fostering collaboration. By being aware of my own emotions and understanding the emotions of others, I can create an environment where people feel valued and heard. This builds trust, which is the foundation for effective teamwork and collaboration.

What role does adaptability play in leadership, especially in rapidly changing industries?

Adaptability is crucial in leadership, particularly in today’s fast-paced world. As a missionary and pastor, I’ve learned to embrace change and see it as an opportunity for growth. Being adaptable allows leaders to respond to new challenges with creativity and resilience, ensuring that we remain effective in our mission.

How can leaders cultivate a culture of innovation and continuous improvement within their organizations?

Leaders can cultivate a culture of innovation by encouraging curiosity, welcoming new ideas, and creating a safe space for experimentation. At Metanoia Ministries, I’ve found that fostering open dialogue and empowering others to take initiative leads to continuous improvement and fresh approaches to ministry.

What are the most effective ways for leaders to mentor and develop future leaders within their teams?

Mentoring future leaders starts with investing time in their growth. I strive to model servant leadership, provide opportunities for hands-on experience, and offer constructive feedback. Encouraging others to discover and use their strengths is one of the most rewarding aspects of leadership.
