Los Angeles-based celebrity jewelry designer, Joanne Kim Chang, launched her own jewelry line in 2004 after being inspired by the meaning of Louella as a beautiful warrior. You launched your jewelry line in 2004, after being inspired by the meaning of Louella as a beautiful warrior. Tell us about Maison Louella and your journey as a jewelry designer. 

After visiting Paris in Fall 2004, I was inspired by Parisian high fashion and fine jewelry, so I wanted to launch my own brand and create my own pieces. Maison Louella was launched to be a design house for people who love fashion and jewelry. It’s been so joyful to be a jewelry designer and to create something valuable and beautiful that people would love to buy.

I like simple and modern jewelry designs with glamorous accents. From day to night or casual to formal I’d like to design jewelry that can be suitable for any outfit, like casual luxury. 

 

What makes your designs unique? 

I try to use unique gems such as black diamonds or grey diamonds which are not common for fine jewelry. 

Maison Louella is adorned by celebrities including the cast of Netflix’s Selling Sunset. What are among the favorite designs by celebrities? 

I love the multi-round earrings which Mary wore. Can’t wait to see them on the new season of Selling Sunset. 

What do you enjoy the most about working with clients? 

I love making relationships and connections with my clients. 

 

How have you evolved as a jewelry designer? Can you share your favorite designs? 

I started as a self-taught jewelry designer making jewelry with simple tools. I was lucky to meet professional jewelry setters who can help me convert my designs to fine jewelry. I love my triangle black earrings. 

 

Any recommendations for the holidays? 

The holidays are the highlight of the year. We should wear gold and glitter to bring good vibes and luck to the new year. 

 

What can we expect to see from Maison Louella in 2022?

I’d love to partner with fashion influencers, musicians, or athletes. I’d love to create vivid color stones jewelry in 2022.
