Marc Buchanan, the visionary founder of Pelle Pelle, began his journey in the heart of Detroit in 1978, instilling into the brand name “Pelle” — the Italian muse for “leather” — a promise of exceptional craftsmanship and cultural significance that would resonate across the United States.

With the 1980s coming up, Marc took to the streets, introducing his creations in the cultural alcoves of City Blue in Philadelphia and Blue Jeans in New York. The distinctive charm of Pelle Pelle quickly captivated the imaginations of iconic figures within the community, their followers, and by extension, the wider American youth. Pelle Pelle soared beyond a mere fashion line; it became synonymous with the hip-hop revolution.

The imprint of Pelle Pelle in fashion and culture was profound. The bold statement pieces—leather jackets bursting with vibrant hues, adorned with extravagant logos, and emblazoned with daring prints—set a tone for an entire generation’s look and lifestyle. Pelle Pelle’s garments were not merely attire; they signified a form of uprising, the very embodiment of a cultural renaissance.

Pelle Pelle is an essential thread in the tapestry of fashion heritage—a legacy built for the stylish, discerning individual who values the exceptional. The essence of Pelle Pelle endures, reaching new heights with contemporary and legendary designs that continue to captivate those in pursuit of unrivaled style.

Where did you first find inspiration to begin Pelle Pelle?

From my earliest recollections, I have had a passion for design. I loved ceramics, painting and sculpting but fashion design was what propelled me to a greater stage. As a teenager, my time was spent on design, patternmaking, and the artistry of textiles. It was more than mere study; it was an application, a translation of theory into the tangible, crafting garments not just for myself, but for those around me.

I wasn’t content with creation alone; the thrill of entrepreneurship called to me, leading to the inception of Gandolf & Company in 1971, a brand synonymous with cutting-edge leather outerwear. But five years later, I craved something new, and amidst that yearning, Pelle Pelle sprang to life. I envisioned a high-fashion leather line that was a fusion of luxury and accessibility to fill a void that the market scarcely knew existed.
