James’ father moved to the USA from Australia 40 years back. James got inspired to clean eating and healthy living very early and decided to take it up as his profession. He did a Master of Professional Practice in Dietetics from Iowa State University and started his career as a personal trainer and health coach in 2000.

He has worked with clients of all ages, body types, and lifestyles, helping them achieve their goals related to weight loss, muscle gain, disease prevention and management, sports performance enhancement, general fitness improvement, and overall better health.

In 2010 James founded his fitness and wellness company, Simply Fit. He quickly rose to prominence in the health and fitness industry for his innovative work promoting healthy living and has since collaborated with nutritionists from Korea to develop a wellness program tailored specifically for Asian lifestyles and eating habits.

James is a philanthropist who has been involved in charity work for many years. His foundation, TJG Foundation, provides food to underprivileged and malnourished children in Africa and Asia. Thanks for joining us! Let’s start with getting to know who James Gantt is. And What are you doing these days? 

I am James Gantt. I am a health coach, fitness expert, and nutrition consultant. I have dedicated my life to helping people lead healthy lives. My father moved to the USA from Australia 40 years back. I got inspired to clean eating and healthy living very early and decided to take it up as my profession. I did a Master of Professional Practice in Dietetics from Iowa State University and started my career as a personal trainer and a health coach in 2000.

In 2010 I founded my fitness and wellness company Simply Fit and started online programs to encourage people across the globe to follow a healthy and clean lifestyle. These days I am collaborating with nutritionists from Korea to curate a wellness program tailored for Asian lifestyles and eating habits.

 

What made you decide to become an entrepreneur? 

I believe learning should never stop and I decided to become an entrepreneur because I am too passionate about learning. Many people equate age, status, or certain achievements with the end of their education, but for me to learn is to be alive. I am never satisfied with the knowledge I have – I am always seeking more. I found that learning interested me, from formal education to on-the-job discoveries, and that I can never know enough about the things that excite me. That was the time when I identified I am driven to be an entrepreneur.

 

What would you say are the top 3 skills needed to be a successful entrepreneur, and why? 

In my opinion, the following three qualities are inherent in all successful entrepreneurs.

 

Adaptability

In most cases, as you roll out your company, you discover that things you expected to work well didn’t work at all. You stumble into things that you didn’t expect to work but they will. All this means you have to be able to adapt to new circumstances and situations.

 

Persistence

No road to success is smooth, you will encounter bumps. You’ll lose great customers. Fine employees will leave your company, and some may become your competitors. Things will become more complex when the government changes regulations. To succeed, you will have to be persistent.

 

Work Ethic

The third essential skill for entrepreneurial success is the ability and the willingness to work very hard. Starting off is usually difficult. Your days will be much longer than eight hours. You’ll be on call 24/7. Success as an entrepreneur requires hard work.

 

You sound quite passionate about your work; why? Is there a story behind it? 

There isn’t a story behind my passion for my work. I once read somewhere, “Passion is the fuel that entrepreneurs need to keep going. Passion is a key predictor of entrepreneurs’ creativity, persistence, and venture performance. The more passionate the entrepreneur, the more likely they are to succeed.”

 

How do you separate Simply Fit from your competitors? 

Simply Fit is an excellent place where every client is helped and encouraged to explore their capacity and potential to succeed. We get people excited to train, energize their workouts, and show them how to get where they want to go. At Simply Fit, we help our clients take training to the next level.

 

What was the biggest problem you encountered launching your podcast and how did you overcome it? 

I encountered imposter syndrome before starting a podcast. I had a very dominant feeling that all my success is not well-earned. It happened just by chance. I thought I am not credible enough that listeners would pay heed to my ideas or opinions. Then I focused on trusting myself and that I am not afraid to start a podcast and with time everything got better!

 

How do you stay driven and motivated to keep going in your business and podcast? 

To stay driven and motivated to keep going in my business and podcast I maintain a healthy routine by creating an active morning routine. I set reminders to engage in motivational activities. And I get a good night’s sleep.

 

What’s the best part of your job? 

There are so many things that I love about my job, flexible schedules, a fun environment, but most of all, the ability to help someone!

 

What is your definition of success? 

As mega-successful entrepreneur Michael Gerber says: “The entrepreneur in us sees opportunities everywhere we look, but many people see only problems everywhere they look. The entrepreneur in us is more concerned with discriminating between opportunities than he or she is with failing to see the opportunities. The ability to see opportunities is a real success for me!
