Kevin Leuck is an insurance consultant focusing on risk management and contract consulting. Since 2019, Leuck has been running Kevin Leuck Contract Consulting, helping small and medium-sized enterprises manage risks in the contracting process. Leuck’s success has a lot to do with his experience of over 25 years working at USAA. Leuck joined USAA in 1995 as a service representative and quickly rose through the ranks as the years went by. By 2011, Leuck had grown to become a supply chain manager and even negotiated a billion-dollar, 10-year service contract. He took these experiences into the consulting world, and he has done a pretty good job at it. Besides having a successful career, Leuck has a pretty active social life. He loves soccer and is a big fan of Manchester United.

Please tell us a bit about your business – what is your company about

I am an insurance consultant helping SMEs manage risks and handle business contracts. I started the company in 2019 and have seen the business grow over time. Today, I have a large and growing portfolio of clients, and I am pleased about my progress.

How did your background set the stage for your expertise in insurance consultancy?

I would say it gave me the experience to serve my clients in the best way possible. As a result, I can draw in new clients and easily grow my business. Having worked with USAA for over two decades and negotiating deals in the billions of dollars, I would say my career at USAA laid the perfect groundwork for me. I don’t think I would be enjoying the success I have today were it not for my earlier career. I would urge anyone seeking a career in consultancy to first work at a company that allows them to hone their skills before venturing out on their own.

Was it difficult to get started?

Like every other entrepreneur, I had my fair share of challenges when I started my consulting business. One of them was adjusting from being an employee with a stable income to dealing with long periods without new clients. I also had to contend with working longer hours than I was used to at USAA. Simply put, it was hard getting out of the comfort zone of life at USAA. The good news is that I overcame all these problems through determination and a genuine passion for what I have been doing for over two decades.

What is your vision goal for your firm in 2022?

My plan for 2022 was to grow my client numbers and serve them in the best way possible. Halfway through the year, I am proud to say that my client numbers are rising. I am also getting a lot of positive feedback from existing clients, an indicator that we are serving them right. I intend to double down on marketing and customer service and double the current customer numbers by the end of 2022. It seems like an ambitious goal, but one thing I have learned in business is that as long as you have superior customer service, the odds are that new customer numbers will always come after you.

What inspired you to start your career as an insurance executive?

I wasn’t exactly looking for an insurance career when I first joined at USAA. However, after a year on the job, I started falling in love the job thanks to the atmosphere at USAA that encouraged learning and career progression. I took the opportunities that USAA presented today, and I am today. Besides the inspiration my workmates at USAA gave me through the years, I would like to thank them for their support, even as I decided to start my consulting firm.

Were there any difficulties you had while setting up your insurance consultancy?

Like other entrepreneurs, I faced some challenges when setting up the business. The biggest one was ensuring that costs remained low before client numbers rose to cover the costs. I also faced the challenge of getting things done right when multitasking. In the initial stages, I handled most of the company roles, which was tasking. Luckily, I got used to it, and over time, client numbers grew, allowing me to let go of the non-core tasks, and focus on serving customers.

How do you separate yourself from your competitors?

I make sure to give my customers the best services possible. The fact that I have been doing this for decades has helped a lot, too. Since I started the business in 2019, this is the main reason why I have grown my customer numbers and gained market share over my competitors. I also set myself apart from the competition through superior customer service. I always ensure that the service I offer clients is as personalized as possible. This has helped me retain customers and get new ones through referrals.

As a risk and contracting consultancy company director, what is the important takeaway (your goal) for the firm that you want people to know about?

I want people to know that professional risk management services are not the preserve of large corporations. You can also benefit from these services as a small or medium-sized company. Consultancy firms like Kevin Leuck Contract Consulting are there to help you get the job done. We have done it for many SMEs, and we do it for you, too.

You are actively involved and engaged in sponsoring charitable organizations in your community. Can you share with us a little about it?

I always give back to the community whenever I can. I find joy in knowing that whenever I give back to a worthy course, especially those touching on children, I could transform somebody’s life for the better.

What do you think it is that makes you successful?

If I had to narrow it down, I would say it comes down to tenacity and self-confidence. Of course, there are other important factors, such as talent and hard work. But without determination, even the most gifted individual will eventually give up, and without faith, it’s impossible to overcome obstacles. I believe these two qualities have allowed me to succeed despite all my challenges. Whenever I’ve been tempted to give up, my tenacity has kept me going, and my faith has given me the strength to keep going even when things seem impossible. If you want to succeed, never give up and always be confident in your skills and capabilities.

What motivates you to keep going in all that you do?

I’m motivated by my desire to help others. This keeps me going when things get tough. I also think we are all put on this earth to help others. Whenever I see someone struggling, I can’t help but want to step in and lend a hand. It’s rewarding to know I’ve made a difference in someone’s life. Since, for the most part, you need money to change the lives of others, I work hard at what I do to get the money I need to live well and transform society, even if it’s in a tiny way.

What business books have inspired you?

I wouldn’t call it a business book, but it has principles that can be applied in the business world. That book is none other than “The Art of War” by Sun Tzu. It’s an ancient Chinese military treatise full of sage advice for modern-day entrepreneurs. For example, Sun Tzu says, “If you know your enemies and know yourself, you will not be imperiled in a hundred battles.” In other words, if you’re well-prepared and understand the competition well, you’ll be successful even in the most challenging circumstances.

Do you have an important message you would like to share with our readers and entrepreneurs?

Strive to be the best at what you do, and success will follow you.
